Whanau classes are having a hangi!!!!!

Yesterday we prepared our hangi in our hurihanga groups and today we got to see the hangi be put into the ground.

Some of our tamariki have never experienced a hangi so they were extremely excited.

Thank you to all our kaumatua for their help and hard work :)

Weekly Hurihanga

Our whanau class Hurihanga has been going really well the last 5 weeks. Our tamariki are learning to be great tuakana to our teina while learning about innovation within Te ao Maori.

Guess Who?

My ears aren’t focused on coaches advice yet in my crazy mind I know what he was saying. When I hear the roaring however disruptive, crowd I put on my headphones to focus. I hear my name from the speaker and nervously walk out of my changing room, and immediately saw my competition. I was amazed at how they looked, so athletic and strong but coach pinched me and told me to focus. I stood on my diving board eager to get in the water. The crowd went silent, then BANG!! I dived into what felt like the north poles wintery water, except I don’t feel cold, I feel good. I can’t even hear the crowd. I see that I’m coming second but that’s not good enough for me so I blast my arms and kick my legs all the way to the end. I did it! My heart soared like an eagle and my pride grew like a plant. I sighed a breath of relief. Coach congratulated me and gave me a hug. I thanked him and congratulated the other competitors. What an incredible race.

Te awa ō Hinerakei

Long long ago in a beautiful papa kainga lived a muscular and handsome chief named Te Uri o Tai. Now Te Uri o Tai's parents wanted him to get  married but Te Uri o Tai thought there was no pretty women in his Papa kainga.

That afternoon an angelic patupaerehe visited the papa kainga. She wished to have some ika me kotakota riwai. The kind villagers granted her request yet after they saw that she dumped her scraps in the awa that lead to Hinerakei's cave.

They angusly reported this crime to Te Uri o Tai who wanted to see this patupaerehe. When he cast eyes upon the patupaerehe he fell deeply in love with her.

Eventually Tanemahuta found out what the patupaerehe had done he wished to banish her into a deep crack in the earth. Te uri o tai defended her because of his love for her, but that night the patupaerehe betrayed Te uri o Tai by going home with a different man. 

This infuriated Te Uri o Tai so  much that he asked Tanemahuta to throw the patupaerehe into the sky and turn her into a puaka.

Tangaroa and the Europeans

It was a scorching hot day, and Europeans were going to the Pacific islands. They were searching for colourful kaimoana to show for the camera.

"Captain there’s a gigantic rock ahead'' yelled one of the captain’s brothers. Crack! "oh no the ship has a hole in it the oil is coming out" said the brother.

As all the oil was spilling out Tangaroa, the kaitiaki of the awa burst, "Who polluted my awa!" Tanagroa was pukuriri and very frustrated.

"We are sorry please forgive us" sobbed the Europeans. Tangaroa made humongous storms and made it makariri."Stop we will do anything for you if you stop" cried all the Europeans.

The god of Tangaroa arrived because he knew there was a situation."Tangaroa stop this storm right now and forgive them!" he yelled. Tangaroa calmed downed and was kind of hiamoe. Tangaroa was harikoa at the end and became friends with the Europeans because of Tangaroas God.

The day the Europeans tried to take over Aotearoa

One sunny early morning Tangaroa was in a nice deep sleep. Everyone was fine till Tangaroa woke up.

As the Europeans were traveling to Aotearoa their boat randomly started leaking. They didn't know the boat was leaking so they carried on.

As soon as Tangaroa woke up he was off to find some kai for his breakfast. He usually eats sea weed for breakfast but there was none left because he had eaten it all. He saw something getting closer and closer to land, he was very curious about what was going on. Tangaroa swam a little closer to the ship to spy on the people on the ship.

He saw a whole lot of bags full of kaimoana.

Tangaroa saw something leaking out of the ship. He soon realised that it was oil and was going to kill all the animals in the sea. He got so mad he made the karekares get bigger and bigger. Tawhirimatia saw what was going on so he rushed down to help.

He tried to calm him down but it made him more mad. The waves were so big it covered the ship and all the ship was gone.

Te Hiakai Imprisoned

Te hia kai imprisoned

One beautiful sunny day Te Hia Kai was doing his normal routine. This was making fire in his old rugid cave. Then suddenly Te Hia Kai was STARVING his puku rumbled and he needed to eat.

"Okay snack time" he told himself. He grabbed 30 packets of chips. Te Hia Kai gobbled his kai up in one swallow then threw them straight into the fire which caused ahuahi to poison its surroundings. But he didn’t care at all just watched it burn down.

"Time for my daily walk'' he said with laughter. As he walked he ate MORE packet foods dropping them into the, awa in the trees and basically everywhere. "Hmm I’m tired" he thought to himself. Lumbering slowly down the trail he arrived back home. "Home sweet home". As he laid in bed he made a fire throwing all of his extra rubbish into, but he didn’t know he had being watched though by the fierce Mahuika god of fire.

Mahuika was pukuriri because he was using the fire and he was causing poison killing innocent creatures. Mahuika visited Te hia kai and just in case she didn’t go too crazy Maui tagged along. When Mahuika arrived she told him off loudly, but after a while he lost interest and day dreamed. She got so furious Maui and she discussed a punishment. "You will be locked up here until you have learnt your lesson" Ever since then awas, forests and all land was squeaky clean but te kia kai was nowhere to be found.

Today we had a discussion about Harambe the gorilla. A four year old boy had fallen into his enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo and they had to shoot him to save the boy from getting hurt.

At first we disagreed with him being shot but after some research, most of us agreed that the Zoo made the right decision.

We made a padlet displaying some of the reasons why we agree and why we disagree.

Mongoose

Mongoose are endangered animals who fight for themselves.

Mongoose appearance

Mongoose have a long shaped face and short stubby legs. They also have small round ears. Some can come in tan but mainly bring win and grey. Mongoose also have have short fur and a short muzzle. They also have paws they look like human hands.

Habitat and diet

The location of a mongoose is usually Africa but they can also live in Asia. Forests and the grass plains are there habitat too. Mongoose mainly eat crabs and chicken but may eat birds and rats.

Interesting facts

They are very vicious and tough. Mongoose can battle venomous snakes and win the battle. This is because of there thick fur coats they all species of mongoose have. Hawks can be a threat, though they can easily harm the mongoose and many other creatures in his habitat.

Conclusion

These small creatures are harmless to humans but fierce predators.

Meauring capacity

Room 1 are learning to estimate and measure capacity using litres and Millilitres. 

Before we measured using measuring jugs. We estimated using our knowledge of how many cups could go in. We knew that 250ml = 1 cup. We made estimations based on the prior knowledge we had.

After we estimated the measurements we used measure jugs that had millilitres and litres on the side. We filled the bottles up first then poured the water into our jugs and added up the numbers.

We then realised 1 litre = 1000ml and 1000ml = 1 litre. Now when we go to the shop we can convert litres into millilitres with our families.

Libby said we can use the measuring cups for baking as well because it says how many cups are on each jug. Baking is usually measured by cups.

This was a fun lesson.
