Today we had a discussion about Harambe the gorilla. A four year old boy had fallen into his enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo and they had to shoot him to save the boy from getting hurt.

At first we disagreed with him being shot but after some research, most of us agreed that the Zoo made the right decision.

We made a padlet displaying some of the reasons why we agree and why we disagree.

Mongoose

Mongoose are endangered animals who fight for themselves.

Mongoose appearance

Mongoose have a long shaped face and short stubby legs. They also have small round ears. Some can come in tan but mainly bring win and grey. Mongoose also have have short fur and a short muzzle. They also have paws they look like human hands.

Habitat and diet

The location of a mongoose is usually Africa but they can also live in Asia. Forests and the grass plains are there habitat too. Mongoose mainly eat crabs and chicken but may eat birds and rats.

Interesting facts

They are very vicious and tough. Mongoose can battle venomous snakes and win the battle. This is because of there thick fur coats they all species of mongoose have. Hawks can be a threat, though they can easily harm the mongoose and many other creatures in his habitat.

Conclusion

These small creatures are harmless to humans but fierce predators.

Meauring capacity

Room 1 are learning to estimate and measure capacity using litres and Millilitres. 

Before we measured using measuring jugs. We estimated using our knowledge of how many cups could go in. We knew that 250ml = 1 cup. We made estimations based on the prior knowledge we had.

After we estimated the measurements we used measure jugs that had millilitres and litres on the side. We filled the bottles up first then poured the water into our jugs and added up the numbers.

We then realised 1 litre = 1000ml and 1000ml = 1 litre. Now when we go to the shop we can convert litres into millilitres with our families.

Libby said we can use the measuring cups for baking as well because it says how many cups are on each jug. Baking is usually measured by cups.

This was a fun lesson.

Room 1 are looking at the words
KAITIAKITANGA/KAITIAKI- 

KAITIAKITANGA

Means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view. A kaitiaki is a guardian. This can be a person or group that cares of someone or something.

We discussed some of the things we were kaitiaki of.

What is sustainable living?

We brainstormed what natural resources we have. Then we looked at all the problems our world faces

(We sorted these problems into the correct category yesterday) 

We decided that sustainable living was a solution to try and solve the problems our world might be facing. 

We defined what we think sustainable living is in our own words. 

Here are some definitions. Later on we will come back and revise these definitions.

Measurement fun

Measurement

Did you know the tallest man was 251 cms we then measured our selves against the line of how tall he was and it was the height of 1 jayde and half of tiana. We then did the shortest man and he was 54.6 cms and when we measured our height against it the line went up to tianas thigh.

Praises group: Did you know the shortest adult was 54.6 cm long.We measured James leg and it was the same size of the shortest adult.

Life Ed- Digital Citizenship

We learnt about trolling, how and why we need to keep our personal information private and how to be safe on the internet. We loved having Harold and Misty at our kura.

Narrative writing

Room 1 came up with our own success criteria for a great narrative. Our theme for the story was

A STORY OF SURVIVAL 

 

We then went away and used the success criteria to help us write an awesome narrative

The scare of the banana- By Tiana (Year 5 )

As long years passed the banana grew and became dull and boring. The bananas human friend suggested going to a maze or to space but the banana said “all I could hear was you telling me I was going to be squished or explode”.

I knelt down to bless the weird looking Taiaha but when I picked it up it let out a huge bang! “Hey!” cried one of the soldiers. “I don’t know if you know but I’m allergic to death, especially around the face.”

Suddenly the water was just above their heads and they could not leave but managed to go up every once in a while. Then they managed to get out of the cage but noticed they were lost at sea.

When we got halfway we were hit by something, Zap! I turned into a monster squid and eftpos turned into a flaming bird but Amber, we couldnt understand her because she was speaking Japanese.

I made a wellness cake because we are studying wellness. I put all the new things I have learnt about wellness into my cake and turned it into a video. Thanks to mum and dad for helping me.

We made up new Enduring understandings today to see what we have learnt about Wellness. Then we isted all the new things we have learnt in wellness.

We had a little giggle when we compared them to what we learnt in week one and two.

Web conferencing with room 2

We had so much fun Web conferencing Room 2 today. We had to organise our roles, then we had to organise our selves to make sure we were prepared to complete the job.

We worked together as a team and it flt good to not argue with anyone in our team. Research and writing team worked really well under pressure.

We are really proud of how we set everything up and were prepared so that everything went smoothly.

That means how are you? in Maori.

Room 1 had the pleasure of having our other two whanau classes in our class. Room 14 the year 1 & 2 whanau class and room 21 the year 3 & 4 whanau class. 

We meet every morning on Mondays and every Afternoon on Fridays. 

WHANAU are more than welcome to come and join with karakia and Waiata.
